Massey Ferguson T148 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU): Transmission Module Low Supply Voltage (TRANS)

Issue description

The Transmission Control Module is receiving a voltage signal that has dropped below the minimum operating threshold required for the module to function correctly, which can cause erratic transmission behavior or trigger a fail-safe/limp mode.

Check the cause

  1. Use a multimeter to check the resting battery voltage (should be ~12.4V - 12.6V) and perform a load test to ensure the battery doesn't drop voltage excessively under load.

  2. Start the tractor and measure the voltage at the battery terminals. The alternator should be outputting between 13.5V and 14.5V.

  3. Check the main battery terminals, chassis grounds, and cab grounds for heavy corrosion, rust, or loose connections.

  4. Trace the wiring harness leading to the Transmission Control Module. Look for chafed wires, pinched lines, or moisture/corrosion inside the module's multi-pin connector.

  5. Test the specific fuses and power relays that supply the transmission circuit. A failing relay can cause intermittent voltage drops.

Repair steps

  1. Clean and Tighten Connections

    Disconnect the battery. Clean the battery posts, terminals, and main chassis ground with a wire brush. Reconnect and tighten securely.

  2. Replace Power Source Components

    If the battery failed the load test, replace it. If the alternator is not charging the system, replace the alternator and the drive belt.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If you found damaged wiring or corroded pins at the TRANS module connector, splice in new wiring or repin the connector using OEM repair pigtails. Apply dielectric grease to the connector to prevent future moisture intrusion.

  4. Replace Relays

    If the transmission power relay is sticking or showing high resistance, replace it with a new OEM relay.

  5. Module Replacement

    If the battery, alternator, and wiring all test perfectly (delivering a solid 12V+ to the module under load), but the T148 code remains active, the Transmission Control Module has an internal hardware failure and must be replaced or sent out for remanufacturing.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the T148 code and test drive the tractor through all ranges to ensure the code does not return.
