T154

Massey Ferguson T154 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS / TRANS1): Issue With Range 1 Switch Signal

Issue description

Short circuit to 0 V on the Range 1 switch circuit (component X488). The controller is seeing a grounded signal voltage on the circuit that monitors whether the transmission is engaged in Range 1.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related code T160 (inconsistency between switch X488 and solenoid X484), which may indicate a broader harness problem.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 1 switch (X488) on the transmission housing for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector at the X488 switch and use a multimeter to check the signal wire for continuity to ground. If grounded while disconnected, the fault is in the harness.

  4. If the harness tests fine, test the switch itself for an internal short or a mechanically stuck plunger.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Switch

Locate the Range 1 switch (Component X488) on the transmission control block/housing.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  3. Remove the Connector

Unplug the electrical connector from the Range 1 switch.

  4. Remove the Faulty Switch

Unscrew the faulty switch from the transmission housing. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

  5. Install the New Switch

Thread the new OEM replacement switch into the port and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new switch. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes

Connect the AGCO EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to the tractor's diagnostic port to clear the T154 fault code.

  8. Test Operation

Start the tractor and cycle the transmission through all ranges to ensure the code does not return and Range 1 engages properly.
