T156

Massey Ferguson T156 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS / TRANS1): Issue With Range 3 Switch Signal

Issue description

The Range 3 switch (component X490) is experiencing a short circuit to 0 V (ground). The controller is receiving a grounded signal voltage from the switch, preventing the system from verifying if Range 3 is properly engaged.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the Range 3 switch (X490) to the transmission controller for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or exposed copper causing a short circuit to ground (0 V).

  2. Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to check for internal shorts to ground.

  3. Check the Range 3 solenoid valve (X486 / L54) to ensure it is functioning properly, as an inconsistency between the switch and the solenoid valve can trigger related codes.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Switch

Locate the Range 3 switch (X490) on the exterior of the transmission/gearbox housing.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  3. Remove the Connector

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the Range 3 switch.

  4. Remove the Switch

Unthread the faulty switch from the transmission housing. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

  5. Install the New Part

Thread the new OEM transmission range switch into the housing and tighten it securely.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical connector back into the new switch.

  7. Clear and Test

Reconnect the battery, use a diagnostic tool to clear the T156 fault code, and test drive the tractor. Shift through all transmission ranges to ensure Range 3 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
