Massey Ferguson T157 – Transmission Controller (TRANS / TRANS1) / Autotronic 5: Issue With Range 4 Switch Signal. (TRANS)

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Range 4 switch (X491/L59) for chafing, bare wires, or pinched sections that could cause a short to ground (0 V).

   Inspect the 2-pin connector at the switch for corrosion or pushed-out pins.

   Disconnect the sensor and check the harness side with a multimeter: Pin 1 should receive a 12V supply from the Autotronic 5 module, and Pin 2 is the signal return.

   Check the Range 4 solenoid valve (X487/L55) to ensure it is not sticking, which can cause the module to flag a switch inconsistency.

   Use the Massey Ferguson EDT or Wintest software to monitor the live state of the Range 4 switch while manually shifting ranges. If the signal remains at 0V regardless of the physical gear range, the switch is internally shorted.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the transmission range switches on the side/top of the gearbox housing. The Range 4 switch (X491/L59) is typically grouped alongside the switches and solenoids for Ranges 1, 2, and 3.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the Range 4 switch.

   Removal

   Clean the area around the switch to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Unscrew and remove the faulty switch from the gearbox housing.

   Installation

   Thread the new transmission range switch into the housing and tighten it to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

7. 7

   Clear Codes

   Connect the Massey Ferguson EDT or Wintest diagnostic software to the tractor and clear the T157 fault code from the Autotronic 5 module.

   Test Drive

   Start the tractor and test drive it, shifting up and down through all four ranges (A, B, C, D / 1-4) to confirm smooth shifting and ensure the fault code does not return.
