Massey Ferguson T160 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 1 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 1

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an inconsistency between the state of the Range 1 engaged switch (L56 or X488) and the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52 or G25). The controller is commanding the solenoid to engage Range 1, but the switch is not confirming the engagement (or vice versa).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness for the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) and Range 1 switch (L56) for an open circuit or a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V.

  2. Measure the resistance of the Range 1 solenoid valve. It should be 7.2 Ω ± 7% (measured between pins 9 and 20).

  3. Verify the Range 1 switch is not shorted to 0 V, which can also trigger related switch codes.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Components

The transmission solenoid valves are located to the front and right-hand side of the gearbox on the clutch unit.

  2. Preparation

Clean the area around the transmission control valves to prevent debris from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connectors for the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52) and the Range 1 switch (L56).

  4. Dismounting

Remove the retaining screws and flanges holding the solenoid valves in place.

  5. Testing the Circuit (Optional)

If diagnosing the mechanical shift rails internally, service manuals suggest fashioning a union to supply the control circuit with compressed air at a maximum pressure of 4 bar to manually actuate the ranges and verify mechanical movement.

  6. Replacement

Replace the faulty Range 1 solenoid valve or Range 1 switch with a new OEM part.

  7. Reassembly

Refit the solenoid valves along with their flanges and tighten the screws.

  8. Finalization

Reconnect the electrical connectors, clear the T160 fault code using a diagnostic tool, and perform a road test to ensure Range 1 engages correctly without inconsistency.
