Massey Ferguson T161 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 2 (TRANS1)

Inconsistency between the switch and range 2 solenoid valve. The transmission control system detects that the physical state reported by the Range 2 engaged switch (X489 or L57) does not match the commanded state of the Range 2 solenoid valve (X485 or L53). When this fault occurs, the tractor will often refuse to move, or it will feel like it is trying to take off with the handbrake on.

   Inspect the Range 2 solenoid valve on the transmission valve block for heavy rust or corrosion, which can cause mechanical sticking when the tractor warms up.

   Unplug the Range 2 solenoid and measure the resistance across its pins (a healthy coil typically measures approximately 7.2 Ω ± 7%).

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 controller and the transmission side cover. Check for a 'Short circuit to 0 V' on the Range 2 switch (X489) circuit.

   Perform a manual continuity test on the Range 2 engaged switch (X489 / L57) to ensure it opens and closes correctly when the mechanical rail shifts.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a flat, level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Locate the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side/top of the transmission housing.

   Identify Components

   Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53 / X485) and the Range 2 switch (L57 / X489) using the tractor's specific hydraulic schematic.

   Remove the Faulty Component

   If the solenoid is faulty: Disconnect the electrical plug. Remove the retaining screws/flange holding the solenoid valve in place and pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve block. If the switch is faulty: Disconnect the electrical plug and unthread the switch from the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque. If replacing the switch, thread the new switch in and tighten securely.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reconnect the electrical harnesses. Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the stored T161 fault code from the Autotronic 5 module, and test drive the tractor through all Dyna ranges to ensure smooth shifting and no binding.
