Massey Ferguson T162 – TRANS1: Issue With Range 3 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 3

The transmission controller has detected an electrical or mechanical inconsistency between the commanded state of the Range 3 solenoid valve and the actual physical feedback from the Range 3 engaged switch.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller, the Range 3 switch (X490/L58), and the Range 3 solenoid valve (X486/L54) for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Using a multimeter, test the Range 3 solenoid valve for an open circuit or a short circuit to +12V or ground (0V). Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil (approx. 7.2 Ω ± 7%).

   Test the Range 3 engaged switch (X490/L58) for continuity, or use a dealer diagnostic tool to monitor the live state of the switch to see if it toggles when Range 3 is manually commanded.

   Ensure there is no mechanical binding in the transmission selector rails or forks, and verify hydraulic pressure is sufficient to engage the range.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate Components

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission housing. Identify the Range 3 solenoid valve (X486 / L54) and the Range 3 position switch (X490 / L58).

   Disconnect Harnesses

   Carefully unplug the electrical connectors from both the switch and the solenoid valve.

   Remove Faulty Component

   If replacing the solenoid: Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve to the transmission block. Pull the solenoid valve straight out. If replacing the switch: Unscrew the position switch from the transmission housing.

   Install New Component

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve or switch with clean transmission fluid. Insert the component and tighten the retaining screws/threads to the OEM torque specification.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harnesses securely.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and use a diagnostic tool to clear the T162 fault code. Depending on the model, you may need to run a transmission calibration routine via the dash or diagnostic tool to allow the Autotronic 5 module to relearn the engagement points.

   Test

   Test drive the tractor, shifting through all ranges to confirm Range 3 engages smoothly without triggering the code.
