T163

Massey Ferguson T163 – Autotronic 5: Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 4 (TRANS1)

Issue description

Indicates an inconsistency or failure involving component X491 (Range 4 switch and Range 4 solenoid valve), specifically a failure in the CAN bus messaging between the tractor's instrument panel and the transmission controller regarding the engagement status of Range 4.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the CAN network wiring harness for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins at both the instrument cluster and the Autotronic 5 connectors

  2. Test the Range 4 solenoid valve (G26, L55, or X491) resistance across the pins (should measure approximately 7.2 Ω ± 7%)

  3. Check the Range 4 position switch for a short circuit to 0V or an open circuit

  4. Use the Massey Ferguson solenoid valve service test tool (OEM Ref: 3378805M1) to manually check the shifting of each range, return to neutral, and switch operation

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the transmission control valves.

  2. Locate Component X491

Locate the Range 4 solenoid valve and switch assembly on the transmission's side cover/valve block.

  3. Inspect and Clean Connections

Disconnect the wiring harness to the Range 4 solenoid and switch. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and verify that the wiring is intact all the way back to the Autotronic 5 module.

  4. Replace Faulty Components

If the solenoid fails the resistance test or the switch fails the continuity test, remove and replace the faulty component.

  5. Torque Specifications

When installing a new Range 4 switch, OEM manuals state to tighten the switch to a maximum torque of 50 Nm.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the T163 fault code from the Autotronic 5 module.

  7. Test Drive

Operate the tractor and shift through the ranges to ensure Range 4 engages properly and the CAN communication error does not return.
