Massey Ferguson T217 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU / TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Foot Throttle Sensor

The electronic control system is receiving a signal from the foot throttle potentiometer (Sensor X71) that is outside of its normal operating range (greater than 4.5V or lower than 0.5V). When this occurs, the throttle may be inhibited or forced into a limited mode where no RPM request can be made.

   Check the wiring harness leading to the foot throttle sensor for physical damage, as heat, moisture, and vibration can corrode copper strands or loosen pin contacts.

   Inspect the sensor connector (X71) for corrosion or loose pins, which can interrupt voltage flow and cause erratic signal readings.

   Check for broken ground wires, which are a frequent cause of fluctuating throttle output and can lead to misdiagnosed ECU problems.

   Use a multimeter to perform full continuity and resistance testing on the potentiometer to see if the internal tracks are worn out or broken.

   Resolve Wiring Issues

   If the diagnostic checks reveal broken wires, corroded connectors, or a bad ground, repair the wiring harness or clean the connector pins.

   Replace the Sensor

   If the wiring is intact but the sensor fails the resistance test (or the code persists), the foot throttle potentiometer is faulty and must be replaced.

   Calibrate the Throttle Pedal Sensor

   Whenever the throttle potentiometer is replaced or modified, it must be calibrated to the tractor's system. Ensure the engine is stopped, access the calibration menu via the tractor's electronic service tool or Datatronic monitor, and carry out the calibration in two successive steps to determine the minimum and maximum engine speeds in relation to the physical position of the pedal (fully released vs. fully depressed).
