Massey Ferguson T218 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS2): Issue With Message On CAN BUS From Armrest Gear Shift Up Signal

The control module is either not receiving the expected CAN bus communication signal when the operator presses the armrest button to shift up a gear, or the signal being received is invalid, corrupted, or out of range.

   Inspect the gear shift up button/toggle on the armrest for physical damage, sticking, or debris that might prevent proper contact.

   Check the electrical connectors at the base of the armrest control console and at the Transmission ECU for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

   Test the CAN bus wiring harness between the armrest and the TRANS module for chafed wires, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

   Use a multimeter to check the CAN High and CAN Low lines for proper network resistance (typically 60 ohms across the circuit when powered down) and verify that the armrest module is receiving proper supply voltage and ground.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery (negative terminal first) to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

   Access the Armrest Console

   Carefully remove the trim panels on the armrest to access the internal switches and the armrest control board.

   Test the Switch

   Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the gear shift up switch when actuated.

   Replace Faulty Components

   If the switch fails the continuity test, replace the switch (or the armrest control board/assembly, depending on whether the switch is hard-soldered to the board on your specific model).

   Repair Wiring

   If the switch is functional, trace the CAN wiring down the seat pillar to the transmission ECU. Repair any broken or chafed wires using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques.

   Clean and Reassemble

   Clean all connector pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease if specified by the OEM, and securely reconnect all harnesses.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, connect a diagnostic tool to clear the T218 fault code, and test-drive the tractor to ensure the transmission shifts up correctly from the armrest without logging the error.
