Massey Ferguson T228 – Transmission Controller (TRANS) / Autotronic 5: Transmission Internal Software Issue (TRANS)
Issue description
EEPROM failure or a state where the transmission program has neither parameters nor calibration, meaning the transmission controller has either suffered a physical memory chip failure or has completely lost its operating software and calibration data.

Check the cause
Check system voltage to verify the battery is fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage (voltage drops below 7V can cause logic faults)
Inspect the wiring harness, chassis grounds, and multi-pin connectors going to the Autotronic 5 module for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins
Attempt a software flash and calibration using the Massey Ferguson dealer diagnostic tool (Wintest / EDT) to see if the module accepts the flash and holds the calibration
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Module
The Autotronic 5 controller is typically located under the right-hand cab floor or within the right-hand side console, depending on the specific cab configuration.
Remove the Old Module
Carefully release the locking tabs on the wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the module. Remove the mounting bolts/screws securing the module to the chassis/bracket and remove the unit.
Install the New Module
Mount the replacement Autotronic 5 controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses. Reconnect the battery.
Program and Calibrate
A new Autotronic 5 module is shipped blank. Use the Massey Ferguson Wintest/EDT software to program the module with the specific tractor's parameters (e.g., tire size, transmission type, engine match) and perform a full transmission calibration.
