Massey Ferguson T240 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS or TRANS2): Issue With Powershift P Solenoid Supply Voltage

Issue description

The measured current for the Powershift module solenoid valve P (Component X478) exceeds the maximum possible limit of 1.4 Amps, indicating a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring harness between the Transmission controller and the Powershift module solenoid valve P (X478) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short circuit to ground.

  2. Disconnect the X478 solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage.

  3. Perform a circuit isolation test: with the solenoid disconnected, turn the key on and check if the T240 code changes to T241 (Open circuit). If it does, the wiring is likely intact, pointing to a faulty solenoid.

  4. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance of the X478 solenoid coil. Low resistance indicates an internal short causing it to draw more than the 1.4A threshold.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare tractor for repair

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the Powershift valve block module on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Identify solenoid

    Identify the X478 Powershift P solenoid valve (refer to your specific model's service manual diagram if necessary, as it sits alongside the L and N solenoids).

  4. Disconnect solenoid

    Depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid.

  5. Repair wiring

    If the wiring harness was found to be damaged during diagnostics, splice and repair the wires using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors.

  6. Remove faulty solenoid

    If the solenoid failed the resistance test, unbolt/unscrew the faulty X478 solenoid valve from the Powershift module. Have a catch pan ready for minor hydraulic oil spillage.

  7. Install new solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector securely.

  9. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery.

  10. Test and clear codes

    Start the tractor, clear the stored fault codes using a diagnostic tool (or via the dash interface, depending on the model), and test the powershift ranges to ensure the code does not return and shifting is smooth.
