Massey Ferguson T242 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS2): Issue With Powershift P Solenoid Supply Voltage

The transmission controller monitors the electrical current and voltage going to the Powershift module's solenoid valves. This code is triggered when the controller detects an abnormal condition on the circuit for the 'P' solenoid—such as an open circuit (current dropping below expected thresholds, e.g., < 13 mA), a short circuit to +12V, or a short to ground.

   Locate the Powershift solenoid valve block on the transmission and inspect the wiring harness leading to the 'P' solenoid for chafing, melting, or physical damage

   Disconnect the solenoid connector and check for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins

   Using a multimeter, check the wiring between the TRANS module and the solenoid for continuity, and test for a short to ground or a short to +12V

   Measure the internal resistance (Ohms) of the 'P' solenoid coil to check for an internal open or short

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Solenoid

   Clean the area around the Powershift module on the transmission to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue, splice and repair the damaged section of the harness, or replace the connector pigtail.

   Solenoid Replacement

   If the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining bolt/clip holding the 'P' solenoid valve in the block. Extract the old solenoid and install the new one, ensuring the O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the solenoid.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a compatible diagnostic tool or Massey Ferguson's Wintest software to clear the T242 fault code from the TRANS module.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor through its powershift ranges to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the code does not return.
