T243

Massey Ferguson T243 – Transmission Controller (Autotronic 5): Issue With Powershift L Solenoid Supply Voltage

Issue description

Short circuit to +12 V on the circuit for the L X479 - Powershift module solenoid valve. The transmission controller detects that the measured current is > 40 mA in relation to the required value for the 'L' solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Powershift valve module on the side of the transmission and identify the specific solenoid designated as 'L' (X479)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Autotronic 5 / Transmission ECU to the X479 solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to a +12V power source

  3. Disconnect the plug at the solenoid and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power supply

  4. Measure the resistance across the pins of the 'L' solenoid coil. A reading of 0 ohms or significantly lower than the standard 10-ohm specification indicates an internal short inside the solenoid coil

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the Powershift module on the transmission to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the 'L' (X479) solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolts holding the solenoid coil and valve cartridge in place, and carefully slide it out.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the Powershift module and torque the fasteners to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the electrical harness. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes

Turn the ignition on and use the tractor's dash interface (DCC) or a diagnostic tool to clear the T243 fault code.

  7. Operational Test

Start the tractor and test drive it, shifting through all powershift ranges to ensure smooth engagement and verify the code does not return.
