Massey Ferguson T245 – TRANS: Issue With Powershift L Solenoid Supply Voltage
Issue description
The transmission control system monitors the electrical current supplied to the Powershift module solenoid valves. For the 'L' solenoid (associated with connector X479), the system expects a target current of approximately 1.4 Amps. Code T245 is triggered when the measured current is outside the expected parameters (e.g., current measured is greater than the maximum possible, or failing to meet the target).

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the 'L' solenoid (connector X479) on the transmission Powershift module for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose pins
Disconnect connector X479 and measure the internal resistance of the solenoid coil using a multimeter (a healthy solenoid typically reads around 10 Ohms)
Check the supply and ground circuits from the TRANS module to the solenoid to ensure there is no short circuit to +12V or an open circuit
Monitor the live current draw to the 'L' solenoid using a diagnostic tool while commanding the transmission to verify if the module is successfully outputting the target 1.4 A
Repair steps
Prepare tractor
Safely park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Clean area
Clean the area around the transmission Powershift valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the wiring harness at connector X479 (Solenoid L).
Repair wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring, repair the harness using proper automotive-grade wire and heat-shrink connectors.
Remove retaining hardware
If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/bolt securing the solenoid coil and valve cartridge to the valve block.
Extract solenoid
Extract the faulty solenoid valve. Be prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid.
Install new solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new OEM solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the X479 wiring harness.
Clear fault code
Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the T245 fault code.
Test and calibrate
Start the tractor, check for leaks, and perform a transmission calibration procedure (if required by your specific model's service manual) before test driving.
