Massey Ferguson T246 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS2): Issue With Powershift L Solenoid Supply Voltage

Open circuit on the X479 - Powershift module solenoid valve (L). The transmission controller logs this fault when the measured current on the circuit drops below 13 mA in relation to the required value.

   Trace the wiring from the Transmission Control Module to the X479 Powershift module solenoid valve for chafed wires, breaks, or pinch points.

   Disconnect the plug at the X479 solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.

   Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. An infinite reading (OL) confirms the solenoid coil has failed internally (open circuit).

   With the key on, check the harness side of the connector to ensure the transmission module is sending the proper supply voltage to the solenoid.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Component

   Locate the transmission powershift valve block. Identify the specific solenoid designated as X479 (Powershift L).

   Harness Repair (If Applicable)

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector, splice in a new section of wire or replace the connector pigtail.

   Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

   If the solenoid coil tested open: Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining nut/bolt holding the X479 solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge (or replace the entire cartridge valve if it is a single sealed unit). Install the new solenoid, torque the retaining hardware to OEM spec, and reconnect the electrical plug.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard dash menu to clear the T246 fault code. Start the tractor and cycle through the powershift ranges (A, B, C, D) to ensure smooth shifting and verify the code does not return.
