Massey Ferguson T248 – TRANS (Transmission Control Module): Issue With Powershift N Solenoid Supply Voltage (TRANS)

Issue description

Short circuit to +12 V on the N X480 - Powershift module solenoid valve. The fault is triggered when the transmission controller detects that the measured current on this circuit is > 40 mA in relation to the required value for the "N" solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Powershift module on the side of the transmission and identify the X480 (N) solenoid valve.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS module to the X480 solenoid. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched harnesses that could cause a short to a +12V power source.

  3. Disconnect the plug at the X480 solenoid. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the power supply.

  4. With the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, use a multimeter to check the supply wire for unexpected +12V voltage (indicating a short to power in the harness).

  5. Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the X480 solenoid coil itself. An internally shorted coil will show abnormally low resistance, causing the current spike (> 40 mA over required) that triggers the T248 code.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Clean the area around the transmission powershift valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the X480 (N) solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, or remove the entire cartridge valve if the mechanical portion is being replaced.

  4. Install the New Solenoid

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it, or thread the new cartridge valve into the block (torque to OEM specifications).

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Ensure the connector clicks into place and the weather seal is intact.

  6. Test

    Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor, clear the T248 fault code using a diagnostic tool or the onboard dash interface, and cycle the transmission through its powershift ranges to verify the code does not return and the shift is smooth.
