Massey Ferguson T252 – TRANS (Autotronic 5): Issue With Powershift N Solenoid Supply Voltage (TRANS)
Issue description
The transmission controller detects that the measured current to the Powershift module solenoid valve N (Component X480) is less than 13 mA in relation to the required value. This indicates an open circuit, a disconnected plug, a broken wire, or a failed solenoid coil preventing the valve from drawing the correct current.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the X480 (N) solenoid on the side of the transmission for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage.
Check the electrical plug on the N solenoid to ensure it is fully seated and free of corrosion, dirt, or transmission fluid ingress.
Disconnect the N solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid coil. An infinite reading indicates an open internal circuit (a dead solenoid).
Connect diagnostic software (Wintest or Jaltest) to monitor the active and requested current values for the Powershift N solenoid while the engine is running to verify controller output.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to protect the Autotronic 5 controller.
Access the Solenoids
Clean the area around the transmission valve block on the side of the gearbox to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic phase revealed a broken wire (current < 13 mA is often a severed wire), splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the harness.
Replace the Solenoid (If Faulty)
Disconnect the electrical plug from the X480 Powershift N solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the solenoid in the transmission block. Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out (have a rag ready to catch residual hydraulic fluid). Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid, secure the retaining hardware, and reconnect the electrical plug.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use your diagnostic tool to clear the T252 fault code. Start the tractor and test drive it, shifting through all powershift ranges to ensure smooth operation and verify the code does not return.
