Massey Ferguson T259 – TRANS: Internal Transmission Module Failure
Issue description
The tractor's onboard diagnostic system has detected a fatal internal hardware or software failure within the transmission control unit. Specifically, this refers to an internal component failure of the Autotronic 5 controller (designated in wiring diagrams as component X473).

Check the cause
Verify system voltage from the battery and alternator. The Autotronic 5 module requires a stable voltage between 11V and 16V; voltage spikes or drops can trigger internal module faults.
Inspect the main harness connector (X473) at the Autotronic 5 module for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.
Check power and ground connections, specifically the main earth terminal (X476), ensuring there are no short circuits in the wiring harness leading to the module.
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (like the Massey Ferguson EDT or Jaltest), cycle the key, and operate the transmission to see if T259 returns as an active hard code. If it returns immediately, the module is permanently damaged.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical arcing or further damage.
Remove the module
Locate the Autotronic 5 Transmission 2 controller (usually located in the right-hand console or under the cab floor, depending on the specific series).
Disconnect harnesses
Carefully unplug connector X473 and any secondary CAN bus connectors.
Swap the unit
Unbolt the faulty module and mount the replacement Autotronic 5 unit.
Reconnect wiring
Plug in all wiring harnesses securely and reconnect the battery.
Program and calibrate
Connect a dealer-level diagnostic tool to flash the correct software for your specific tractor model, transmission type, and optional equipment, followed by a full transmission calibration.
