Massey Ferguson T412A – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Transmission Output Speed Sensor Issue

This code triggers when the transmission controller detects an erratic, missing, or incorrect signal from the transmission output speed sensor (X8). This sensor monitors the rotational speed of the driveline/bevel gear to calculate the theoretical ground speed. When this signal fails, the tractor cannot accurately manage the continuously variable transmission ratios, prompting the system to default to a transmission protection mode or limp home mode.

   Connect the tractor to the Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software and monitor the live output of the 'inst trans output speed' to see if the sensor registers RPMs while moving.

   Inspect the wiring harness and the connector at the X8 bevel gear speed sensor for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins, as a short or open circuit is a common cause.

   Check the transmission oil level and quality. Look for heavily contaminated oil or excessive metal shavings on the magnetic tip of the sensor, which can distort readings.

   Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate the transmission output speed sensor (Sensor X8) on the transmission housing.
