T412B

Massey Ferguson T412B – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Malfunction of the switch of ranges of high / low speeds ('Hare' / 'Turtle')

Issue description

The system is detecting an error, incorrect voltage, or lack of signal from the micro switch or potentiometer responsible for shifting the transmission between the high ('Hare') and low ('Turtle') speed ranges, causing the tractor to default to a transmission protection mode.

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
  • Massey Ferguson 3000 Series
  • Massey Ferguson 6000 Series
  • Massey Ferguson 8000 Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the tractor has entered transmission protection mode (limp mode), which limits engine power and caps maximum speed to 1500 rpm.

  2. Check the shuttle position potentiometer or switch voltage, as incorrect adjustment can cause jerking, delayed direction changes, or a complete lack of response.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the range switch to the Transmission Control Unit for shorts, breaks, or loose connections.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Switch

Depending on the exact model and cab configuration, locate the shuttle position potentiometer or the 'Hare/Turtle' micro switch. It is typically mounted either on the transmission cover on the right-hand side of the tractor or directly on the reversing lever by the steering column.

  2. Remove and Replace

Disconnect the wiring harness from the faulty switch. Remove the mounting screws holding the potentiometer/micro switch in place and install the new OEM replacement part.

  3. Calibrate the Shuttle/Transmission

After replacing the switch or potentiometer, perform a shuttle calibration procedure (often using the Autotronic controller) to ensure the TCU learns the correct voltage parameters for the new switch's positions.
