T4131

Massey Ferguson T4131 – TRANS: Transmission Hydrostatic Speed/Direction Sensor Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller is receiving an erratic, missing, or implausible signal regarding the rotational direction of the transmission's collecting shaft. When this code is triggered, the tractor will typically default to "box protection mode" (limp mode) to prevent mechanical damage to the transmission.

Applies to these machines

  • 7622
  • Interim Tier 4 (2012-2015)
  • 7614
  • 7615
  • 7620
  • 7616

Check the cause

  1. Locate the X10 Collecting shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing and inspect the wiring harness and connector for physical damage, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Verify the 8.5V reference voltage supply to the sensor from the transmission controller, checking for shorts to ground or power.

  3. Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic pickup tip. A heavy coating of metal shavings may indicate internal mechanical wear inside the transmission rather than a failed sensor.

  4. Test the continuity of the signal wires between the X10 sensor connector and the X18 Transmission Control Module.

Repair steps

  1. Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the ParkLock.

  2. Clean the area around the X10 Collecting shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor and carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing.

  5. Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission hydraulic oil.

  6. Insert the new sensor into the port and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

  8. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the T4131 fault code from the TRANS module.

  9. Start the tractor and perform a test drive to verify that the transmission operates normally and has exited "box protection mode".

Parts you might need
