Massey Ferguson T4142 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Hydrostatic Speed/Direction Sensor Issue DYNA VT (TRANS)
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving an inconsistent, missing, or faulty signal regarding the speed or direction of the hydrostatic collecting shaft inside the transmission, causing the tractor to engage limp home mode or gearbox protection mode.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to the X10 Collecting Shaft Speed Sensor for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live data from the X10 sensor, checking for inconsistent direction of rotation or erratic speed values while the tractor is moving.
Check the transmission hydraulic oil level and quality, as contaminated oil or low fluid levels can affect hydrostatic transmission performance and sensor readings.
Check for related fault codes like T4183 or T4185, which also point to inconsistent speed or direction data from the X10 sensor.
Repair steps
Park the tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Locate the sensor
Locate the X10 Collecting Shaft Speed Sensor on the exterior of the Dyna-VT (ML260) transmission housing.
Disconnect the connector
Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.
Remove retaining bolt
Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the transmission housing.
Extract the sensor
Extract the old sensor. Be prepared for a small amount of transmission fluid to weep from the port.
Install new sensor
Lubricate the O-ring on the new OEM speed sensor with clean transmission fluid and insert it into the housing.
Secure the sensor
Secure the sensor with the retaining bolt and torque to the manufacturer's specifications.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness securely.
Clear fault code
Clear the T4142 fault code using a diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor to ensure the transmission operates smoothly and the code does not return.
