Massey Ferguson T4144 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Issue With Signal From Transmission Mounted Engine Speed Sensor DYNA VT (TRANS)

The X25 sensor is mounted on the transmission and measures the engine speed input to manage the hydrostatic and mechanical power split. When the controller detects a missing, erratic, or illogical signal from this sensor, it triggers the fault and forces the tractor into limp home mode (box protection mode) to prevent driveline damage.

   Verify the tractor is in limp home mode, which is the standard protective response for an X25 sensor failure

   Locate the X25 sensor on the transmission housing and inspect the wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or melting

   Disconnect the sensor and check the connector for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion

   Use a multimeter to test the sensor signal circuit to ensure there is no short circuit to +12V or ground

   Remove the sensor and inspect the tip for physical damage or excessive metallic debris buildup that could distort the magnetic signal

   Safely park the tractor on level ground, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Ensure the tractor is secured before beginning work.

   Locate the X25 engine speed sensor on the Dyna-VT transmission housing.

   Identify the sensor location on the transmission.

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Carefully unplug the sensor's wiring harness.

   Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the transmission.

   Unbolt the sensor from its mounting point.

   Carefully pull the old sensor out of the housing.

   Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

   Clean the mounting surface.

   Ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat by removing any dirt or debris.

   Insert the new OEM speed sensor and torque the retaining bolt.

   Tighten the bolt to the manufacturer's specification.

   Reconnect the electrical connector.

   Ensure the locking tab clicks into place.

   Turn on the ignition and use a diagnostic tool to clear the T4144 fault code.

   Clear the stored fault from the controller's memory.

    Perform a transmission calibration procedure if required.

    Depending on the exact model, calibration may be needed. If performed, switch off the ignition for at least 30 seconds afterward to validate and save the calibration data to the controller.

    Test drive the tractor.

    Confirm that normal shifting is restored and limp mode is deactivated.
