Massey Ferguson T4148 – TRANS (Transmission Control Module): Transmission Range Has Not Moved To Neutral DYNA VT (TRANS)
Issue description
The code triggers when the transmission control system commands a shift to neutral, but the mechanical components or the position sensor fail to confirm that the transmission has successfully reached the neutral position.

Check the cause
Check the X17 High/low speed range (Hare/Tortoise) position sensor to see if it is out of tolerance or requires calibration
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the X17 sensor and the mechanical shift to neutral valve for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins
Verify if the mechanical shift to neutral impossible valve is physically stuck, blocked by debris, or suffering from a failed solenoid coil
Ensure the transmission hydraulic oil level is correct and the oil is not heavily polluted, as poor fluid condition can cause mechanical valves to stick
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical shorts.
Locate Components
Locate the X17 High/low speed range position sensor and the shift to neutral valve on the DYNA VT transmission housing.
Test the Sensor
Use a multimeter to check the resistance and voltage signal of the X17 sensor. If the sensor readings are erratic or out of OEM specification, remove the retaining bolt and extract the sensor.
Inspect/Replace the Valve
If the sensor tests fine, remove and inspect the mechanical shift to neutral valve. Clean any debris from the valve body. If the valve is mechanically bound or the solenoid is dead, replace the valve assembly.
Install New Parts
Install the new sensor or valve. Ensure the mounting surfaces are clean and torque the retaining bolts to OEM specifications.
Recalibrate
Reconnect the battery. Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest AGV or dealer software) to clear the T4148 fault code. You must perform a transmission calibration procedure to teach the Transmission Control Module the new sensor's parameters for the Hare/Tortoise ranges and neutral position.
Test Drive
Operate the tractor, shifting between high/low ranges and neutral to verify the repair and ensure the code does not return.
