T4161

Massey Ferguson T4161 – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Issue With Low Speed Range Solenoid DYNA VT (TRANS)

Issue description

Control error with the X14 - Tortoise range solenoid valve that occurs when the transmission attempts to shift from High speed (Hare) to Low speed (Tortoise) mode, causing the tractor to default to a limp-home state.

Check the cause

  1. Check for related transmission codes (such as T4172 or T4173) which could indicate a hydraulic pressure or fluid issue rather than an electrical solenoid failure.

  2. Locate the X14 Tortoise range solenoid valve on the transmission valve block and inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector for breaks, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Test the electrical resistance of the X14 solenoid coil. It should measure approximately 10 Ohms. If the circuit is open or shorted, the solenoid is faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Power down tractor

Power down the tractor and ensure the transmission is in park/neutral.

  2. Clean valve block area

Clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Disconnect electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the X14 Tortoise range solenoid valve.

  4. Repair wiring or replace connector

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the wiring or replace the connector plug.

  5. Remove retaining hardware

If the wiring is intact but the solenoid failed the resistance test (or is mechanically stuck), remove the retaining hardware securing the X14 solenoid to the valve block.

  6. Extract faulty solenoid

    Extract the faulty solenoid valve.

  7. Install new solenoid

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block.

  8. Secure hardware and reconnect

Secure the retaining hardware and reconnect the electrical connector.

  9. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.

  10. Test drive tractor

Test drive the tractor, shifting between Hare (High) and Tortoise (Low) modes to verify the control error has been resolved.
