T4164

Massey Ferguson T4164 – Autotronic 4 transmission controller (TRANS): Transmission Turbo Clutch Solenoid Voltage Supply Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an electrical malfunction—such as an open circuit, short circuit, or an out-of-range Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal—in the circuit supplying voltage to the electromagnetic clutch valve (often referred to as the turbo clutch solenoid or X12 coupler function valve).

Check the cause

  1. Trace the wiring from the Autotronic 4 transmission controller to the X12 Coupler function solenoid valve for chafed wires, breaks, or shorts against the chassis

  2. Disconnect the plug at the X12 solenoid and inspect pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or loose terminals

  3. Verify the transmission controller is sending the correct PWM voltage signal to the solenoid connector using a multimeter or oscilloscope when the clutch/coupler function is commanded

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the X12 solenoid coil to check for an internal short or open coil

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the Valve

Locate the transmission hydraulic valve block. Identify the X12 Coupler function solenoid valve (Turbo Clutch Solenoid).

  3. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the solenoid valve to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission's hydraulic circuit.

  4. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or hardware securing the valve to the block, and carefully pull the faulty solenoid out.

  5. Preparation

Coat the O-rings of the new OEM solenoid valve with clean transmission hydraulic fluid to prevent tearing during installation.

  6. Installation

Insert the new solenoid valve into the transmission block. Install the retaining hardware and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specifications.

  7. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness plug to the new solenoid until it clicks securely.

  8. Testing

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the T4164 fault code from the Autotronic 4 controller. Start the tractor and test the transmission engagement to ensure the error does not return. (Note: A transmission calibration via the diagnostic tool may be required after replacing hydraulic control valves).
