Massey Ferguson T4174 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Parking brake sensor malfunction

The electronic system has detected an inconsistent, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the parking brake sensor/switch, meaning the machine cannot reliably determine whether the parking brake is engaged or disengaged.

   Visually inspect the parking brake sensor (component X618) for obvious physical damage to the sensor body.

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector going to the sensor for corrosion, broken wires, or loose pins that could cause an open or short circuit.

   Verify the condition of the cab/instrument panel fuses (such as F5 or F6 15A/20A) which supply power to the instrument panel and related switches.

   Use a multimeter to test the sensor for proper continuity/resistance when the parking brake lever is manually engaged and disengaged.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and chock the wheels (since you will be working on the parking brake system).

   Locate the Sensor

   Find the parking brake sensor/switch. Depending on the model, it is typically located at the base of the parking brake lever assembly inside the cab or mounted externally on the transmission housing.

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor.

   Removal

   Unbolt or unscrew the defective parking brake sensor from its mounting bracket.

   Installation

   Install the new OEM parking brake sensor. Note: If using a thread-locking compound (like Loctite) on the threads, apply it sparingly to avoid locking adjacent parts, and do not attempt to retighten after 5 minutes of curing to avoid breaking the compound film.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor.

   Clear Codes

   Turn on the ignition. The fault code can usually be cleared using the Instrument Panel Control Unit. If it is a hard code, a dealer diagnostic tool may be required to clear the TCU memory.

   Test

   Engage and disengage the parking brake several times to confirm the dashboard symbol operates correctly and the T4174 code does not return.
