Massey Ferguson T4189 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Transmission Oil Temperature Signal Issue

Issue description

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or illogical electrical signal from the sensor that monitors the transmission fluid temperature.

Check the cause

  1. Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and inspect the fluid for a burnt smell or metal contamination, which could indicate a severe mechanical issue.

  2. Verify the actual transmission temperature to determine if it is genuinely overheating (temperatures exceeding 110°C / 230°F). If the tractor is cold but the sensor reads hot, the sensor or wiring is at fault.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the X19 Transmission hydraulic oil temperature sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a loose/corroded connector plug.

  4. Check the transmission filter blockage switch (X20) to ensure a clogged filter is not restricting oil flow to the cooler.

  5. Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the X19 sensor. An open circuit, dead short, or resistance values that do not correspond to ambient temperature indicate internal sensor failure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the X19 transmission hydraulic oil temperature sensor. It is typically threaded into the lower transmission casing/sump or near the transmission filter block.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor with brake parts cleaner to prevent dirt and debris from entering the transmission housing.

  4. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Place a clean drain pan underneath to catch any fluid that escapes. Use a wrench or deep socket to unscrew the faulty sensor.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnection

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the plug clicks securely into place.

  7. Fluid Top-Up

    Check the transmission fluid level and top up any lost fluid with the approved OEM oil (e.g., Permatran 821XL Plus or an equivalent CMS M1145 spec fluid).

  8. Validation

    Clear the fault codes from the TCM using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor, allow it to reach operating temperature, and perform a test drive to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the T4189 code does not return.
