T41A3

Massey Ferguson T41A3 – Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor DYNA VT (TRANS)

Issue description

The signal from the transmission control module's internal position sensor (X18) is interrupted or illogical. The system cannot determine the actual position of the transmission actuator, which prevents proper gear/range engagement.

Applies to these machines

  • 7622
  • Interim Tier 4 (2012-2015)
  • 7614
  • 7615
  • 7620
  • 7616
  • 7618
  • 7619
  • 7626
  • 7624
  • 8470
  • 8600
  • 8600T4i

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the X18 position sensor for open circuits, shorts to ground, or corrosion.

  2. Check for related CAN network codes (such as T41B0) or reference output codes (T41A4, T41A5). If CAN bus errors are present, resolve network communication issues first.

  3. Attempt to run a Dyna-VT transmission calibration via the instrument panel to see if the sensor can successfully relearn its reference points.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface with the engine off. Disconnect the battery cables, starting with the negative (-) terminal first, to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Sensor

Locate the transmission actuator internal position sensor (X18) on the DYNA VT transmission housing.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor. Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty position sensor from the transmission block.

  4. Installation

Install the new OEM position sensor. Apply the correct retaining compound (e.g., Loctite 242 medium threadlock) to the sensor mounting hardware if specified by the manual.

  5. Reconnection

Reconnect the electrical harness and reconnect the battery terminals (positive first, then negative).

  6. Calibration (Crucial Step)

You must perform a Dyna-VT transmission calibration using the tractor's instrument panel or a dealer diagnostic tool. This allows the transmission controller to learn the new sensor's 'Position 0' reference output.
