Massey Ferguson T41A6 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor DYNA VT (TRANS)
Issue description
Reference point signal was interrupted during operation. The transmission control module has lost the reference signal from the internal position sensor, meaning it can no longer accurately determine or control the transmission ratio.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting to the X18 / X174 transmission controller (96-pin connector) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins that could cause a momentary loss of the sensor signal.
Verify there are no accompanying CAN network initialization errors (such as T41B0), which could indicate a broader communication failure rather than an isolated sensor failure.
Verify the transmission oil level and ensure the high-pressure transmission oil filter is not blocked, as hydraulic starvation can cause mechanical binding that the actuator cannot overcome.
Repair steps
Access the Actuator
Locate the transmission actuator control unit on the ML260 Dyna-VT transmission housing.
Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Remove the Actuator Assembly
Disconnect the 96-pin connector (X174). Unbolt the actuator assembly from the transmission. Do not attempt to disassemble the actuator to replace just the sensor, as the internal epicyclic gear train and 8000-pulse increment sensor are calibrated as a single unit.
Install the New Actuator
Mount the replacement transmission control actuator and torque the bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Recalibrate the Transmission
A dealer must use the Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to perform a transmission calibration. The new module must learn its 'Position 0' reference output at start-up.
Parts you might need
(1)Dyna-VT Transmission Actuator Control Unit / Transmission Control Module (X18 / X174)
Must be ordered specifically for the ML260 Dyna-VT transmission and requires dealer software programming/calibration upon installation.
