Massey Ferguson T41DA – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Autotronic 4 or Autotronic 5: Calibration error
Issue description
Indicates that the transmission control system has lost its calibration parameters, or that a transmission component (such as a solenoid valve, range sensor, or the control unit itself) has been replaced or drifted out of tolerance. The system requires a relearn/calibration procedure.

Check the cause
Check for active hardware faults (e.g., T41E0). Any codes for the Hare/Tortoise range solenoid valves, range position sensor, or clutch solenoid valves must be repaired before calibration.
Verify transmission fluid temperature is at the correct operating range (at least 40°C or between 35°C and 45°C). Do not attempt calibration if the fluid is cold.
Ensure the tractor is parked on flat ground, the hand brake or ParkLock is engaged, the Power Control lever is in the neutral position, and the clutch pedal is pressed down.
Repair steps
Warm up the tractor
Warm up the tractor until the transmission oil temperature reaches at least 40°C. You can verify this via the Dash Control Center by entering DIAG mode and checking the 'Trans Temp' line.
Prepare tractor for calibration
Ensure the hand brake is applied, the Power Control lever is in neutral, and the engine speed is at low idle (< 1000 rpm).
Access DIAG mode
Access the instrument panel DIAG mode and navigate to the CAL1 screen.
Start calibration
Select the calibration option and press 'OK' to start.
Observe calibration process
The engine speed will automatically adjust (typically to around 1600 rpm), and the Hare/Tortoise symbols will flash alternately.
Wait for automatic cycles
The calibration will cycle through several steps automatically (taking about 6 seconds for the hydraulic motors and pumps). You may hear the transmission shifting and making noises during this process.
Check calibration result
Wait for the screen to display the result. If it displays 'OK', the calibration was successful. If it displays 'ERROR', the calibration failed, indicating a mechanical or electrical fault that must be repaired before trying again.
Save calibration settings
Crucial Step: Switch off the ignition for at least 30 seconds to validate and save the new calibration settings to the Autotronic controller.
Test drive
Restart the tractor and test drive it in all ranges (forward and reverse) to ensure smooth shifting.
