T6156

Massey Ferguson T6156 – PTO Control Module: Malfunction of the switch of the speed range of 540 rpm on the PTO control unit.

Issue description

The system detects that the 540 rpm PTO speed selection switch has been pressed down (or the circuit has been closed) for over 30 seconds. This indicates either a mechanical failure (the physical button is stuck in the depressed position) or an electrical error (a short circuit within the switch or its wiring).

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 5400 series
  • Massey Ferguson 6100 series
  • Massey Ferguson 6200 series
  • Massey Ferguson 6400 series
  • Massey Ferguson 7600 series
  • Massey Ferguson 8100 series
  • Massey Ferguson 8200 series
  • Massey Ferguson 8600 series
  • Renault Ares series
  • Renault Arion series

Check the cause

  1. Visual & Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the 540 rpm switch on the PTO/linkage console. Check if the button is physically jammed, sticky, or held down by dirt and debris.

  2. Electrical Continuity Test: Disconnect the switch from the wiring harness. Use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity. If the switch shows a closed circuit without being pressed, the internal contacts have failed (shorted/leaking voltage), and the switch must be replaced.

  3. Wiring Harness Check: If the switch tests fine, check the wiring loom between the X145 console and the PTO control module. Look for chafed wires causing a short-to-power or short-to-ground that mimics a continuously pressed button.

  4. Clear and Retest: Sometimes a temporary stick can trigger the code. Clear the code via the Dash Control Center keypad and see if it immediately returns upon startup.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Console

Carefully pry up or unscrew the side PTO/linkage console panel to access the underside of the switch module.

  3. Disconnect

Locate the faulty 540 rpm switch (Component X145) and unplug its electrical connector.

  4. Remove the Switch

Depress the retaining clips on the sides of the switch body and push it upward out of the console bezel.

  5. Install the New Part

Snap the replacement switch into the console until the retaining clips lock it firmly into place.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the switch, ensuring the connector seats fully.

  7. Reassemble

Secure the console panel back into its original position.

  8. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use the Dash Control Center keypad to clear the T6156 error code. Test the PTO to ensure the 540 rpm speed engages properly.
