Massey Ferguson T6158 – PTO Control Unit: Malfunction of the switch of the speed range of 1000 rpm on the PTO control unit
Issue description
The system logs this code when the 1000 rpm PTO speed selection switch (designated as component X145) is detected as being pressed down or sending a continuous active signal for over 30 seconds, indicating either a mechanical error (a physically stuck switch) or an electrical error (a short circuit).
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Massey Ferguson 7600 Series
- MF 7614
- MF 7615 Dyna-4
- MF 7615 Dyna-6
- MF 7615 Dyna-VT
- Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
- MF 8670
- MF 8690
Check the cause
Inspect the 1000 rpm PTO switch on the X145 PTO/linkage console for dirt, sticky residue, or debris that might be physically holding the switch in the depressed position
Perform an actuation test by pressing and releasing the switch manually to ensure it springs back freely and does not bind
Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test for electrical continuity. If the switch shows continuity (closed circuit) without being pressed, the internal contacts are fused or shorted
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the X145 console to the PTO control unit for pinched wires or shorts to ground/voltage
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Clean the Console
Thoroughly clean the X145 PTO/linkage console area. Sometimes, simply clearing agricultural debris or spilled liquids frees a stuck switch.
Access the Switch
Carefully pry up or unbolt the trim panel surrounding the PTO/linkage console to access the underside wiring.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector leading to the 1000 rpm PTO switch.
Remove and Replace
Unclip or unbolt the faulty switch from the console housing. (Note: On some Massey Ferguson models, the switches are integrated into a single printed circuit board within the X145 console. If the switch cannot be separated, the entire console module must be replaced).
Reassemble
Install the new switch or console, reconnect the wiring harness, and secure the trim panel.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the T6158 code. Start the tractor and test the PTO speed selection to verify the 1000 rpm range engages and disengages correctly without throwing a code.
Parts you might need
(1)1000 rpm PTO Speed Selection Switch / X145 PTO/Linkage Console Assembly
A specific standalone OEM part number for the individual 1000 rpm switch is not isolated in the available parts catalogs, as it is often serviced as part of the complete X145 PTO/Linkage Console assembly. When ordering, you must provide the dealer with your tractor's specific serial number, as the X145 console configurations vary depending on whether the tractor is equipped with Dyna-4, Dyna-6, or Dyna-VT transmissions, and whether it has economy PTO options (e.g., 540/540E/1000).
