U 2872

Massey Ferguson U 2872 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): DCU or Heater ON error: Time out - Timer 16 elapsed

Issue description

The system timed out while attempting to activate the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) / AdBlue heater. The controller expects a specific voltage/current response or temperature change within a set timeframe. If this does not occur, the U 2872 code is triggered, and the engine may eventually enter a derated state.

Applies to these machines

  • 8600 Series
  • MF 8650
  • MF 8660
  • MF 8670
  • MF 8680
  • MF 8690
  • 7600 Series
  • 8700 Series

Check the cause

  1. Check fuses and relays dedicated to the DEF system (e.g., DEF Tank Heater fuse, Ignition Hose Heaters fuse) and test the DEF heater relay for failure.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the DCU, the DEF supply module, and the line heaters for corrosion, chafed wires, or loose pins.

  3. Test the resistance of the DEF tank heater and the DEF line heaters using a multimeter to check for an open circuit or short to ground.

  4. Verify that the DEF tank temperature sensor is reading accurately, as an invalid signal can prevent the DCU from triggering the heater.

  5. Ensure the DCU is receiving proper operating battery/supply voltage, as low voltage can prevent high-draw components from turning on.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical and DEF systems.

  2. Access the DEF Supply Module

Locate the DEF tank and the attached supply module/pump assembly.

  3. Perform Electrical Testing

Disconnect the electrical harness to the DEF heater. Test the heater element pins with a multimeter.

  4. Replace Faulty Component

If the heater element tests out of specification (open or shorted), the DEF supply module or the specific line heater must be replaced. If the heater tests fine, replace the faulty relay or repair the damaged wiring harness. In rare cases where wiring, relays, and heaters are all functional, the DCU itself may have an internal fault and require replacement or a software re-flash by a dealer.

  5. Reassemble and Prime

Reconnect all harnesses and battery terminals. Ensure the DEF tank cap and breather are clean and secure.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (such as the AGCO EDT or Bosch ESI[truck]) to clear the U 2872 fault code. Run a manual SCR system test or heater actuation test via the diagnostic tool to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • DEF Supply Module
