U 3031

Massey Ferguson U 3031 – Instrument Panel Control Unit: Temperature sensor in urea tank

Issue description

Malfunction or invalid reading from the temperature sensor located inside the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF / AdBlue) tank.

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 8600 Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the DEF tank sender unit for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage

  2. Use a multimeter to verify the integrity of the sensor circuit, checking for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power

  3. Check the DEF tank heater to ensure it is not stuck in the 'ON' position or completely failed, which can cause fluid temperature to drop below or rise above acceptable thresholds

  4. Check for any available ECM/ACM software updates from the dealer to rule out software glitches causing false sensor readings

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery. Clean the area around the top of the DEF tank thoroughly to prevent contamination.

  2. Disconnect Lines

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector to the DEF sensor. Disconnect the heated DEF supply and return lines. Cap the lines immediately to prevent air ingress and contamination.

  3. Removal

Unscrew the retaining ring or unbolt the DEF sender unit from the top of the tank. Carefully lift the entire sender unit out of the tank.

  4. Installation

Insert the new DEF sensor unit into the tank, ensuring the O-ring/gasket is properly seated to keep dust and moisture out. Secure the retaining ring/bolts.

  5. Reconnect

Reconnect the heated DEF lines (ensuring O-rings are not nicked) and the electrical connector.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the U 3031 fault code. Run the engine to verify the DEF system primes correctly and the code does not return.
