Massey Ferguson V124 – Mid Mount Valve Module: External Hydraulic Valve 1 Issue

Issue description

A malfunction in the first remote hydraulic spool valve circuit, indicating a mechanical restriction (stuck spool valve), a loss of communication between the valve module and the tractor's dash, or an out-of-range value from the spool position sensor. The remote hydraulics may become slow, weak, or completely dead.

Check the cause

  1. Check Fluid and Filters: Inspect the hydraulic fluid (UTTO) for contamination, metal shavings, or a milky appearance (water ingress). A blocked hydraulic/transmission filter is a primary cause of restricted flow to the valve block.

  2. Inspect Couplers and Hoses: Ensure the remote couplers are not damaged or blocked, and check for collapsed or leaking hoses leading to Valve 1.

  3. Electrical & Sensor Testing: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Dash to the Mid Mount Valve Module. Look for chafed wires or loose pins. Test the spool position sensor for correct voltage/resistance values, as sensor failure will trigger valve codes.

  4. Mechanical Binding: Manually check if the spool valve linkage (if equipped) is physically sticking due to dirt or lack of lubrication.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

    Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic levers/joystick to relieve all residual pressure in the system.

  2. Drain Fluid (If Contaminated)

    If the oil is dirty, drain the hydraulic fluid and replace the hydraulic filter (recommended every 300–500 hours).

  3. Access the Valve Block

    Remove the necessary cover plates (often the right-hand or rear cover plates depending on if it's an open-center or load-sensing system) to access the main hydraulic valve block.

  4. Disconnect Electricals

    Carefully unplug the wiring harness from the External Hydraulic Valve 1 solenoid and the spool position sensor.

  5. Remove the Valve Slice

    Unbolt the specific spool valve slice (Valve 1) from the hydraulic manifold block. Be prepared for residual oil spillage.

  6. Rebuild or Replace

    To rebuild: Disassemble the valve slice, clean the spool, and install a new OEM spool valve repair kit (replacing O-rings, seals, and springs). To replace: Install a brand new spool valve slice and/or a new spool position sensor.

  7. Reassembly

    Bolt the valve back into the manifold, torque to OEM specs, and reconnect all hydraulic lines and electrical connectors.

  8. Refill and Test

    Refill the system with fresh UTTO (e.g., 10W40) hydraulic fluid. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to clear the V124 code from the ECU. Start the tractor, allow the fluid to warm up, and test the remote hydraulics for proper pressure and flow.
