Issue description

Check the cause

  1. Check the Datatronic 5 Monitor: Navigate to the hydraulics page to see if Valve 4 is locked out or if flow settings have defaulted.

  2. Electrical & Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness, connectors, and coil resistance at the 4th spool valve for rub points, open circuits, or poor ground integrity.

  3. Voltage Test: Verify battery voltage and charging system health. Low voltage during cranking or operation can trigger false valve errors.

  4. Fingertip Control Check: Check the fingertip electric spool switches in the armrest to ensure they are sending the correct voltage signal (0V to 12V) to the TECU.

  5. Mechanical Inspection: Check for physical binding of the spool valve, external hydraulic fluid leaks, or sluggish response, which indicate worn elastomeric seals or fluid contamination.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Clean the area around the 4th external hydraulic valve thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  2. Disconnection

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the Valve 4 solenoid.

  3. Removal of Components

    Unscrew the large pipe/plug from the rear of the valve. (A 1 1/2" 6-point socket with a breaker bar is often required).

  4. Extract the Spool

    Carefully remove the spring. Using a small magnet, draw out the ball cup and the detent balls (usually one larger ball and three smaller ones).

  5. Withdraw and Inspect

    Slide the actuator and spool out of the valve body. Inspect the spool and the valve bore. If the castings are cracked, the bore is deeply scored, or clearances exceed 0.001 inches, the entire valve must be replaced.

  6. Rebuild

    If the metal is in good condition, replace all elastomeric seals and O-rings using an OEM repair kit.

  7. Reassembly

    Reinstall the spool, detent balls, spring, and actuator. Torque all fittings to OEM specifications.

  8. System Reset

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Use the control unit dashboard / Datatronic monitor to delete the error code and unlock the valves. Test the hydraulic flow to ensure proper operation.
