Valtra 102 – ECU: Intake Manifold Boost Pressure Fault

Issue description

Valtra fault code 102 indicates a problem with the engine's intake manifold absolute pressure (MAP), also known as boost pressure. This fault is logged by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) when the signal from the boost pressure sensor falls outside the expected range for current engine operating conditions. An incorrect signal disrupts the air-fuel mixture calculation and turbocharger control, leading to symptoms such as loss of power, sluggish acceleration, black smoke, and poor fuel economy.

Applies to these machines

  • Valtra tractors with Sisu/AGCO Power engines (EEM3)

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active faults, as the boost pressure sensor may share its power supply and ground wires with other sensors, indicating a potential harness issue.

  2. Visually inspect the entire air intake and boost system from the air filter to the intake manifold for loose clamps, cracked or split hoses, and charge air cooler leaks (listen for a 'whooshing' sound during acceleration).

  3. Inspect the boost pressure sensor and its electrical connector for corrosion, dirt, water intrusion, damaged pins, or soot and oil clogging.

  4. Check for air flow restrictions, ensuring the engine air filter is clean and the intake manifold is free of blockages.

  5. Check the EGR system (if applicable) for a stuck-open EGR valve, which can recirculate too much exhaust gas and cause low boost pressure.

Repair steps

  1. Address leaks and restrictions

If any leaks were found in the intake system, repair them first. Replace any cracked hoses or faulty clamps, as this is the most common cause of low boost pressure faults.

  2. Clean the sensor

If the sensor appears clogged with soot or oil, carefully clean it using a dedicated MAF (Mass Air Flow) or electronics cleaner. Do not use harsh chemicals like brake or carburetor cleaner, as they can damage the element.

  3. Test sensor wiring

If the fault is electrical (e.g., FMI 3 or 4), test the sensor's wiring harness. Check for a 5V supply at the sensor connector, a good ground connection, and continuity on the signal wire back to the ECU.

  4. Test the sensor

Using a diagnostic tool, compare the commanded boost pressure to the actual boost pressure reading from the sensor while the engine is under load. If there is a significant discrepancy and no leaks are present, the sensor is likely faulty.

  5. Replace the boost pressure sensor

If the sensor's voltage reading is out of the specified range and the wiring is confirmed to be good, replace the intake manifold pressure sensor.

  6. Clear fault codes

After completing the repair, clear the fault code from the ECU's memory using a diagnostic tool and verify that the fault does not return.
