Yale 190-7 – Vehicle System Manager (VSM) or Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Speed Exceeds Command

Issue description

The engine's actual RPM is higher than the RPM being commanded by the controller. This is typically caused by a discrepancy between the throttle command and the engine's physical speed, which can stem from a faulty RPM sensor, a wiring issue, a stuck throttle/governor, or a malfunctioning control module.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Engine RPM sensor and the throttle body for any signs of damage, wear, or bad crimps

  2. Test the RPM sensor by checking its mounting, encoder wheel, and using a multimeter to verify it receives proper power (5V reference), ground, and outputs a consistent pulse signal

  3. Check mechanical throttle components by inspecting the throttle body and governor to ensure they are not physically sticking open

  4. Inspect the Vehicle System Manager (VSM) or Engine Control Module (ECM) for any visible signs of damage or malfunction

  5. Check for outdated software on the ECM or VSM

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Forklift

    Park the forklift on a level surface, lower the forks, apply the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed frayed wires, loose connectors, or bad crimps at the RPM sensor or throttle body harness, repair or replace the affected wiring.

  3. Replace the RPM Sensor

    If the sensor fails the multimeter pulse test or has physical damage, remove the mounting bolt, extract the old sensor, and install a new Engine RPM sensor. Ensure the sensor air gap is correct if it is adjustable.

  4. Address Throttle Body Issues

    If the throttle body is sticking, clean the throttle plate and bore with an approved cleaner. If the internal electronic actuator is failing, replace the throttle body assembly.

  5. Replace/Update the VSM

    If the sensor and throttle body are functioning perfectly, the VSM or ECM may be faulty. If replacing the VSM, note that the new module must be calibrated and configured to the truck using the OEM PC Service Tool.

  6. Clear Codes

    Access the dashboard system using the 5-digit service password to clear the fault codes from the system memory. Test operate the forklift to ensure the code does not return.
