Yale 190-8 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Crank/CAM Synchronization

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine speed signal is abnormal but still within a functional range, meaning the camshaft and crankshaft are not properly in time with each other, or the engine control module is receiving fluctuating/erratic signals from the cam or crank sensors. Symptoms typically include a "Cranks, No Start" condition or a complete loss of RPM readings.

Check the cause

  1. Check the timing belt for proper tension, damage, or missing teeth.

  2. Check the air gap between the Cam Sensor and the Cam Reluctor Wheel (especially critical on Kubota diesel engines).

  3. Check the Cam Reluctor Wheel (tone ring) for proper installation, orientation, dirt, or damage.

  4. Inspect the crankshaft and camshaft speed sensor connectors for looseness, corrosion, or open/shorted circuits.

  5. Inspect the sensor housing for dust or debris that could be interfering with the magnetic pulse.

  6. Run diagnostic live data to observe the real-time RPM signal for erratic fluctuations caused by electrical noise or voltage instability.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Timing Components

    Gain access to the front of the engine to inspect the timing belt and sensor housings.

  2. Clean the Sensors

    Remove the engine speed sensors (cam and crank) and clean the sensor tips and the tone ring to ensure no debris is blocking the signal.

  3. Verify Timing

    Check the mechanical timing of the engine. If the timing belt is loose, damaged, or missing teeth, it must be replaced and the engine re-timed.

  4. Adjust Air Gap

    If the engine uses an adjustable sensor bracket (like Kubota diesels), measure and set the correct air gap between the sensor and the reluctor wheel.

  5. Replace Faulty Sensors

    If the wiring is secure, the timing is correct, and the RPM readings remain erratic on your diagnostic tool, replace the camshaft and/or crankshaft position sensors.

  6. Clear and Test

    Clear the 190-8 fault code from the ECM and run the forklift under load and at idle to verify smooth RPMs and ensure the code does not return.
