Yale 2000-12 – VSM (Vehicle System Manager) or Engine ECU: CAN Tx Failure

Issue description

Critical loss of communication on the machine's Controller Area Network (CANbus), meaning a module is failing to transmit data across the network.

Check the cause

  1. With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires at the diagnostic connector (60 Ohms is healthy, 120 Ohms indicates an open circuit or missing/damaged termination resistor, 0 Ohms indicates CAN Hi and CAN Lo are shorted together).

  2. Check for an open or intermittent circuit on the CAN HI and CAN LO lines.

  3. Verify that CAN HI is not shorted to ground (STG) and CAN LO is not shorted to the supply/battery voltage (STS/STB).

  4. Check for an open circuit on the power or ground feeds to all CAN-connected devices.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage and ensure accurate resistance readings.

  2. Locate CANbus wiring

    Locate the diagnostic port or steering column connectors to access the CANbus wiring (yellow and green wires).

  3. Test circuit resistance (Open Circuit)

    Test the circuit resistance using a digital multimeter. If the reading is 120 ohms, physically trace the wiring harness to locate the open wire or find the faulty termination resistor and replace it.

  4. Test circuit resistance (Short Circuit)

    If the reading is 0 ohms, inspect the wiring harness for pinched, rubbed, or melted sections where the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires are shorting together. Repair the damaged wiring.

  5. Inspect connectors

    Inspect connectors at all nodes (especially returning to the VSM) for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins. Clean or repair as necessary.

  6. Test module functionality

    If the wiring harness, power/ground feeds, and termination resistors all test perfectly, the failure is likely internal to a CAN-connected device (most commonly the VSM or ECU).

  7. Replace faulty module

    Replace the faulty module. Note: If replacing the VSM, the new or used unit will need to be calibrated/programmed to your specific truck's serial number for all hydraulic and drive functions to operate correctly.
