Yale 2023-12 – Instrument Panel Display / Vehicle System Manager (VSM): CANbus Error With Display

Issue description

Loss of communication over the Controller Area Network (CANbus) between the machine's display panel and the main controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Yale and Hyster Forklifts
  • Yale VX Series (e.g., GLP050VX, GC135VX)
  • Yale VT Series (e.g., ERP16VT)
  • Yale MR Series (e.g., MR16)
  • Hyster FT Series (e.g., H70FT, S80FT)

Check the cause

  1. Power Cycle: Turn the forklift power to OFF for no less than 30 seconds, then turn it back to ON to see if the displayed DTC clears.

  2. Visual Inspection: Conduct a quick visual inspection of all connectors and wiring associated with the display, the VSM (often located under the seat deck), and the Mini Lever Module (MLM) if equipped. Ensure sockets and pins are seated correctly and that the connectors 'click' to indicate the locking tab works.

  3. CANbus Resistance Test: Disconnect the battery before testing. Locate the diagnostic connector (typically a 3-pin connector under a rubber cover on the right-hand side of the steer column). Test the resistance across the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires (often a green/yellow twisted pair). You should read approximately 60 Ohms. If you get 100 Ohms or higher, you have an open termination resistor.

  4. Short Circuit Test: Check for continuity (a short) between the CAN Hi and CAN Lo wires, as well as shorts to ground or battery voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Access the Wiring

Remove the front cover off the steer column to access the display wiring and diagnostic ports. If checking the VSM, remove the seat deck to access the main controller.

  3. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If the visual inspection or multimeter tests revealed damaged wires, an open circuit, or a short between the green/yellow CAN wires, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness or the damaged connector pins.

  4. Replace Termination Resistor

If the CANbus resistance test yielded 100+ Ohms, locate and replace the faulty CANbus termination resistor.

  5. Replace Faulty Modules

If the wiring harness, power/ground supplies, and termination resistors all test good (60 Ohms present, no shorts), the communication failure is due to a failed CAN device. Replace the Instrument Panel Display. If the issue persists, the VSM may have an internal failure and require replacement.

  6. Reassemble and Test

Reconnect all modules, reconnect the battery, and turn the key on to verify the 2023-12 code has cleared and display functions have returned.
