Yale 521-3 – Vehicle System Controller (VSC): Brake Pedal Position Sensor OORH
Issue description
The controller is receiving a voltage signal from the brake pedal position sensor that is higher than the maximum expected threshold. This indicates conditions such as a sensor ground open circuit, sensor signal shorted to the sensor supply voltage, sensor signal shorted to battery voltage, internal sensor failure, or a functional failure in the controller.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- Yale and Hyster Forklifts
- Yale (and Hyster) forklifts manufactured from 2005 and newer
- Veracitor VX series (e.g., GC/GLC/GP/GLP models)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the brake pedal position sensor to the controller for an open ground circuit or wires shorted to supply or battery voltage.
Back-probe the sensor connector to test the voltage/resistance output, verifying if the sensor has failed internally and is outputting a constant high voltage.
Test the controller's sensor input circuits to rule out a module malfunction falsely reading a high voltage.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the forklift battery to ensure safety and prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Sensor
Locate the brake pedal position sensor mounted on the brake pedal assembly in the operator cab.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed broken wires, an open ground, or melted insulation causing a short, repair or replace the affected section of the wiring harness.
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is good but the sensor failed the diagnostic test, remove the mounting hardware and disconnect the pigtail to remove the faulty brake pedal position sensor. Install the new OEM sensor and plug in the connector.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key switch on and use the dash display or a diagnostic tool (like Jaltest or Yale PC Service Tool) to clear the fault codes.
Test Operation
Depress the brake pedal multiple times to ensure the code does not return and the forklift brakes operate smoothly.
Controller Replacement
If the code persists after verifying the wiring and replacing the sensor, the controller module has an internal functional failure and must be replaced and reprogrammed.
