522631-2

Yale 522631-2 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Pre-Cat Bank 1 Sensor Fails To Switch To Rich

Issue description

The engine is operating in a lean condition. The pre-catalytic converter oxygen sensor on Bank 1 is continuously reading a lean fuel mixture and is failing to toggle back to a rich reading. This can be caused by a failed O2 sensor, a wiring issue, or a genuine lean-running engine condition.

Applies to these machines

  • Yale and Hyster Forklifts
  • Yale forklifts
  • Hyster forklifts
  • Fortis series

Check the cause

  1. Check the wires at the O2 sensor connector and test the voltage between the positive and ground pins (should read 5 volts)

  2. If 5 volts is not present, check the voltage between the positive pin and the machine's frame to verify if the ground wire in the harness is broken

  3. Perform a sensor swap test by swapping the Pre-Cat Bank 1 O2 sensor with the Pre-Cat Bank 2 O2 sensor to see if the fault code follows the sensor (e.g., changes to 522633-2)

  4. If the sensor is good, inspect the engine for genuine lean conditions, including vacuum leaks, fuel lines from the tank to the LP converter, the LP converter itself, inline fuel filter, FAP sensor, and fuel injectors

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the Battery

Always disconnect the battery before performing electrical repairs or replacing sensors.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic voltage test revealed a broken ground or supply wire, trace the harness back to the ECU and repair the break.

  3. Replace the O2 Sensor

If the sensor is faulty, locate the Pre-Cat Bank 1 Oxygen Sensor on the exhaust manifold. Disconnect the electrical pigtail, use an O2 sensor socket to unthread the sensor, apply anti-seize to the new sensor threads, install and torque to OEM specifications, and reconnect the electrical connector.

  4. Address Fuel/Air Issues

If the sensor swap proved the sensor was functioning, repair the root cause of the lean condition. This may involve replacing a clogged inline fuel filter, rebuilding/replacing the LP converter, or replacing leaking vacuum lines.

  5. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, clear the ECU fault codes, and run the forklift to operating temperature to ensure the code does not return.
