Yale 522764-6 – Vehicle System Manager (VSM) or Power Distribution Module (PDM) / Display (DSC): Ign/Alt - Ignition 1 Relay (RL6) Driver Output OORL

Issue description

"Out Of Range Low," indicating that the output driver feedback voltage is lower than expected when the circuit is commanded ON. This points to a shorted relay coil, a short to ground on the relay driver output circuit, or a functional failure within the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Reset the System: Turn the truck power OFF for no less than 30 seconds, then turn it back ON to clear the displayed DTC. If the code reoccurs, proceed to the next step.

  2. Visual Inspection: Conduct a quick visual inspection of all connectors and wiring associated with the PDM and the displayed fault code. Look for corrosion, loose pins, or insulation damage.

  3. Test the Relay Coil (Cause A - Shorted Relay): Ensure the truck power is OFF. Open the cover on the PDM and remove the Ignition 1 Relay (RL6). Using a digital multimeter (DMM) set to the ohms scale, measure the resistance between the relay's coil terminals. A typical healthy 12-volt relay coil should read between 80 and 200 ohms. If the resistance is less than 0.5 ohms, the relay coil is shorted.

  4. Test the PDM Relay Driver Output (Cause B - Short to Ground): Measure the resistance between the relay socket's positive terminal (typically pin 86) and battery ground (-). If the resistance is less than 0.5 ohms, the relay driver circuit has a short to ground. Disconnect the indicated PDM connector and repeat the measurement. If it remains less than 0.5 ohms, the short is located in the wire harness.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn the machine off and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Replace the Relay

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a shorted relay (resistance < 0.5 ohms), replace the Ignition 1 Relay (RL6) in the PDM with a new 12V micro relay.

  3. Repair the Wiring Harness

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to ground in the wiring, trace the wire from the PDM relay socket through the harness. Locate and repair or replace the shorted wire/connection.

  4. Replace the Controller

    If the relay and wiring harness both test good, the fault lies within the controller (VSM or PDM) experiencing a functional failure. Replace the faulty module.

  5. Verify Repair

    Reinstall all removed components, reconnect the battery, and turn the key ON to verify the fault code has cleared and the truck operates normally.
