Yale 523930-3 – Transmission Controller / Vehicle System Manager (VSM): FWD Circuit Shorted High
Issue description
The system has detected an abnormally high voltage on the forward directional circuit. Operators generally report that the forklift starts but will not move. When shifted into forward or reverse, a wrench/spanner symbol appears on the dash, and the machine defaults back to neutral to protect the transmission.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- Yale and Hyster Forklifts
- Yale VX Series
- Yale Veracitor 25VX
- Yale GLC
- Yale GLP
- Hyster FT Series
- Hyster S50FT
- Hyster H50FT
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission's forward directional coil to the controller for rubbed, melted, or pinched wires causing a short to system voltage.
Use a multimeter to test the forward circuit relay coil (Clutch FWD1 coil) for an internal short circuit. Compare the resistance reading to OEM specifications.
Test the controller's driver output pins to verify if the controller is sending the correct signals or if the internal driver has failed.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short to voltage in the harness, repair the damaged wiring or replace the affected harness section.
Replace the Coil
If the forward directional valve coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut on the transmission control valve, slide the old coil off the valve stem, and install the new coil.
Replace the Controller
If both the wiring and the coil are in good working order, the fault lies within the VSM/Controller. Replace the controller and perform any necessary dealer calibrations/programming.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the dash display or diagnostic handset to clear the error codes. Test drive the machine to ensure forward and reverse engagement operates normally.
