Yale 523930-4 – VSM (Vehicle System Manager): Clutch FWD1/Return Circuit OORL
Issue description
The controller detects abnormally low voltage or resistance on the Forward 1 (FWD1) clutch solenoid circuit, registering as a short circuit and disabling the transmission from engaging in the forward direction.

Check the cause
Perform a soft reset by turning the truck power OFF for no less than 30 seconds, then turn it back ON to see if the DTC clears.
Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness routing down to the FWD1 transmission control valve for rubbed-through wire insulation, pinched wires, or corroded connectors.
Perform a Harness Short-to-Ground Test: With truck power OFF, disconnect harness connectors from the VSM and transmission control valves. Measure resistance between the FWD1 pin on the VSM connector and the negative battery terminal. Less than 0.5 ohms indicates a short to ground.
Perform a Coil Internal Short Test: At the transmission valve connector, measure resistance directly between the FWD1 coil pins. Less than 0.5 ohms indicates the coil is internally shorted.
Verify VSM functionality: If the wiring harness and solenoid coil test normal (greater than 0.5 ohms), check if the truck serial number displayed on the dash (DSC) matches the physical nameplate to ensure the VSM is communicating properly.
Repair steps
Repair wiring harness
Trace the FWD1 circuit wire from the transmission solenoid back to the VSM to locate the short. Cut out the damaged section of the wire and splice in a new section using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section entirely. Secure the harness away from high-heat or high-vibration areas.
Replace solenoid coil
Disconnect the battery. Locate the FWD1 clutch solenoid on the powershift transmission control valve block. Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty coil. Remove the retaining nut/clip holding the coil to the valve stem and slide the old coil off. Slide the new OEM replacement coil onto the valve stem and secure it. Reconnect the harness and battery.
Replace VSM
If the VSM has suffered a functional failure, disconnect the battery and remove the VSM module. Install the new VSM. Note: A new VSM will require dealer-level software (Yale PC Service Tool) to flash the correct firmware and match the truck's serial number and configuration parameters.
Clear fault and test drive
Turn the key ON, clear the fault log via the dash display, and test drive the forklift in forward and reverse to ensure the code does not return.
