524223-4

Yale 524223-4 – Vehicle System Manager (VSM) or Transmission Controller: Transmission Reverse Pressure OORL

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage from the transmission's reverse pressure sensor (transducer) has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • Yale and Hyster Forklifts
  • 2005 and newer Hyster and Yale forklifts
  • Yale Veracitor series (VX)
  • Yale GDP25VX
  • Yale GP090VXN
  • Hyster Fortens series (FT)
  • Hyster H80FT
  • Hyster S50FT
  • Hyster 2.5 Fortens

Check the cause

  1. Locate the two 3-wire pressure transducers side-by-side on top of the transmission housing

  2. Inspect the sensor connectors for moisture, corrosion, or loose pins (often caused by steam cleaning or pressure washing)

  3. Check the wiring harness, specifically the white wire (Wire #364), for an open circuit or a short circuit to the chassis/frame ground

  4. Verify there is no sensor supply open circuit, sensor signal open circuit, sensor signal shorted to sensor ground, or sensor signal shorted to frame ground

  5. Perform a swap test: swap the reverse pressure sensor with the identical forward pressure sensor. If the fault code changes to 524225-4, the sensor is defective. If it remains 524223-4, the issue is in the wiring harness or VSM

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

Always disconnect the battery ground cable before performing electrical repairs.

  2. Access the Transmission

Remove the floor plates to access the top of the transmission housing where the pressure transducers are located.

  3. Clean and Dry Connectors

Disconnect the 3-wire connector from the reverse pressure sensor. Use electrical contact cleaner and compressed air to thoroughly dry the connector and harness.

  4. Test the Circuit

Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the sensor wiring back to the controller, ensuring there are no shorts to the frame. Repair any damaged wiring.

  5. Replace the Sensor

If the swap test proved the sensor is dead, unthread the faulty reverse pressure transducer from the transmission housing and install the replacement part.

  6. Clear the Codes

Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic handset, a scanner (such as Jaltest), or the onboard dash display (requires the system password) to clear the stored fault codes and verify the truck now drives in reverse.
