This belt tensioner maintains the correct tension on the drive belt that transmits power from the engine to the auxiliary systems. It is mounted in the drive system, where it applies a constant load to the belt to prevent slippage and ensure consistent power delivery to the alternator, water pump, and other driven components. A failing tensioner allows belt slack, which can cause squealing, reduced charging output, and overheating due to reduced coolant pump speed. The manufacturer machines this component to match the original assembly's pivot geometry and spring rate, so the belt operates within its designed tension range without requiring shimming or bracket modification. On replacement, inspect the belt for wear and replace it if glazed or cracked.
